How to buy well at $10K

  • Verify low mileage. Unusually low miles are great if they're real. Match the odometer to the title, history report and service records.
  • Check parts availability. Orphan brands (Saturn, Pontiac) can still be good buys, but research body-panel and trim parts before you commit.
  • Price the whole deal. Compare out-the-door prices, including dealer and documentation fees, not just the advertised number.
  • Look for recalls. Enter the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see any open safety recalls, which dealers fix for free.
  • Get a PPI. An independent inspection can find leaks, accident repair or overdue maintenance a test drive won't.
