How to buy well at $5K

  • Condition beats badge. At this price, a well-kept common car is usually a smarter buy than a neglected premium one. Records matter more than brand.
  • Budget for catch-up maintenance. Plan to keep part of your budget aside for tires, fluids, brakes or a battery right after purchase.
  • Know the big-ticket items. Timing belts, clutches and automatic transmissions can cost a large share of a $5k car. Ask when they were last done.
  • Always get an inspection. A pre-purchase inspection is cheap insurance on any car, and especially at this budget.
  • Check the title carefully. Cheap cars are more likely to carry salvage or rebuilt brands; run the VIN before you drive out.
